Pomeranian Puppy Training

Pomeranian Puppy CareSo you’re looking into Pomeranian puppy training, and I know what you’re thinking,“It’s going to be hard.” False! It’s actually quite fun and entertaining to train your little Pomeranian, and it’ the perfect time to bond with your puppy!

Some people ask me “Well, I don’t really need to train a toy dog do I?”.The answer is “No. As long as you don’t mind a ferocious little fluff ball bossing you around and peeing on your favorite couch!” . It’s a fact that a well-behaved Poms owner is much happier than an untrained fluff-ball’s owner. These Pomeranian puppy training tips will ensure you and your loved one lead a happy life.

OK, so the first Pomeranian puppy training tip is to master the “Sit” command.

Get your dog to stay standing, and hold a treat in your hand. Hold it close to their nose, and slowly move your hand towards their tail. Your dog will usually sit down – If at first he walks backwards repeat this until he does sit. If you see your dog start to sit, say “Sit!” and then once he has sat down, give them the treat. The trick to making this basic Pomeranian puppy training routine work is to keep repeating it until your dog is able to sit without expecting a treat. It might take a few attempts, but stick with it. (It’ the simplest command; your dog should pick it up reasonably fast!)

Now, it’s a good idea to wait a couple of days in between teaching your puppy new tricks, so they don’t get overwhelmed and confused. After your pup knows how to sit, it’s time to teach them the next Pomeranian puppy training routine, to “Stay”.

Sometimes it is better to do this with a lead on your dog. Get your Pom to sit in front of you. Take one step backwards, away from your Pom while still holding the lead. Say “Stay” in a clear voice, hold your hand up in front of your dog’s face, with your palm facing him. If your dog doesn’t move, give them a treat. Then take two steps backwards, and say “Stay”. Once again, if they stay, give them a treat. If your dog keeps getting up to follow you, stop walking backwards and tell them to sit again. Once you and your dog have mastered that, it’s time to take off the lead. This time, move backwards about 5 steps. Keep moving further and further backwards until you can take 10 steps without your dog following you.

Once again, wait a couple of days between these Pomeranian puppy training tips because it’s likely he will get a little confused with this next command, which is “Come”.

Tell your Pom to stay and move back around 8 steps. Then lean forward with your arms wide open and say “Come” in a higher pitched voice (this gets the dog excited and eager to come to you). On the first try, your Pom might look a little puzzled because he has just been taught to stay in the one spot! So a lot of encouragement is needed with this trick, and a lot of praise and cuddles after.

Now, the final basic Pomeranian puppy training commands is “Down”.

Tell your Pom puppy to sit. Hold a treat in your hand close to your dog’s nose. Once they know you have a treat, move the treat slowly down towards the ground. Your Pom should automatically lie down. Sometimes, however, they will put their front legs on the ground but lift their bottom in the air. If this happens, just gently push down on their bottom so they get the message that their whole body needs to be on the ground. Some Pomeranian pups can have difficulty learning this command, but time and patience is the key.
