As a toy dog, Pomeranian health problems are definately existent and they are suseptable to most of the health problems that toy dogs can get. A lot of Pomeranian breeders are conciously screening puppies for genitic issues in an effort to reduce the number of pups effected.
One of the most common Pomeranian health problems is called Luxating Patellas, this is when the knees slip out of place and is very common in the Pomeranian breed.
Collapsing Tracheas is another serious issue for Pomeranians. This is an easy thing to detect as it will seem as though your Pom is coughing or hurling up a fur ball. It can be a serious problem so if you see this happening regularly, get an x-ray.
Unfortunately, one of the most serious Pomeranian health problems is very hard to detect, heart problems.
Heart problems are quite common for a Pom and can range from not very serious to life-threatening and can sometimes result in a sudden death without any real symptoms. You should check with your breeder that there are no heart problems that ran in the lines they are dealing with.
There are a variety of other Pomeranian health problems that can occur but these are the main ones to watch out for.
So what can you do on a daily basis to prevent these health problems? You should be feeding and excersizing your Pomeranian correctly and regularly. Ensure he lives in a safe environment, this means taking away any hazards in your home that you see as a threat to your Pom. You should keep all your vet appointments and ensure he is given all vaccinations, I also recommend heart worm medications.
Above all, you should always be vigilant. As soon as you find any symptoms in you precious loved-one bring him to the vet for a checkup. Here are some common symptoms for Pomeranian health problems.
Thick discharge from the eyes. A slight watery eye is completely normal but a thick discharge can be a sign of blindness and should be checked out by a vet.
Check your Poms body temperature. If the temp fluctuates fairly regularly it can be sign of sickness, bring him to the vet as soon as possible.
Regular discharge from the nose is another sign of sickness that should be looked at right away. Also, most Poms develop a cracked nose over time and this can be medicated, so I highly recommend doing so.
Strange odors coming from the ears or bad breath are tell-tale signs of illness. You should also regularly check your Poms breathing patterns. Irregular breathing can be a serious problem for many Pomeranians as they age so regular checking will help to target problems early.
You should check your Pom daily in order to prevent these problems from arising. The key to a happy and healthy Pomeranian is regular checks and regular visits to the vet. Some Pomeranian health problems are inevitable but hopefully you have learned everything you need to be able to do the best job you can in keeping your Pom healthy.
